The holidays are whispering they will be here before they know it. Already, my husband’s daughter mentioned she wants a Christmas list. Ugg! I am not ready for the holidays. My husband, Bob, said he was looking forward to walking Balboa Park especially when the have Christmas on the Prado celebrations. It’s called December Nights now to be politically correct.
Fear is already tickling the corners of my mind. There will be parties which means food. There will be shopping which means spending lots of money I don’t have to spend. There will be walking, around Balboa Park and other events, and that means I have to keep up.
The problem is I am out of shape. I have not worked out in a long while especially since I injured my back. Walking distance and fast enough to keep up with everyone creates pain and tightness in my hips.
The solution is the same as the pain creator. Walking, walking, and more walking. It is time I work my way back to five miles a day. Training is what I need. No more excuses.
I have read so many articles about the importance of walking and how walking is the least harmful toward your body other than working out in a swimming pool. Article after article state that if we walk ten thousand steps a day, we will accomplish much in the way of having and keeping a healthy body.
Simply wear a pedometer and a good pair of athletic shoes conducive to walking. I have done it before, and I swear to you, I will do it again. Walking is the easiest exercise we can do, and it requires no expensive membership, no special gear, and no coaches. Just get your bum off the couch and walk.
Start out with a short walk or whatever you are able to do. Each day go just a bit farther until you build up to ten thousand steps. This is what I am going to do. I am going to take my dog, Chloe Cleopatra, along with me. She will love it as much as I do.
Come and join me. I need walking buddies. We can do this together. Keep track of how long and how far you are walking. Before you and I know it, we will reach those ten thousand steps.
No one knows how it feels to walk a mile in our shoes. What is important is that we know what we need to do. We acknowledge what we need to do, and that we do what we need to do. No more excuses.
Walking is a great time to think and work things out. Walking is a great time to not think at all. Put on some headphones and listen to music you love. If you are like I am, you will start dancing or at least bouncing to the beat of the music. I am counting on you to help me, and I will be there for you. Until we meet again, this is Linda Misleh Wagner, Future Former Fatty.
