Nutritional Supplements That Can Save Your Life

Herbs can help control diseasesBesides eating well and exercising, most of us need and should take basic supplements.  It may be that the soil in which we grow our food is depleted, no longer containing the same nutrients it did in the past; or it may be that we are just measuring our needs better. But thousands of studies have proven that basic supplementation helps avoid and ameliorate most diseases, including diabetes.

In my practice, I suggest a few supplements to just about everyone.  If you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, consider taking these staples:

  • A potent, food derived multivitamin: Not just enough of the ingredients to avoid scurvy and rickets which the RDA was designed to help us avoid, but potent amounts, the so-called Optimal Daily Requirements.
  • Essential Fatty Acids: This product whether fish, krill, or vegetarian based is particularly good at preventing heart-related disorders.
  • 1,200 mg Calcium and 600 mg Magnesium:  They are both important for healthy bones, and the magnesium helps fight both constipation and insomnia.  Magnesium at night helps sleep, but if taken in the morning it helps us to stay calm during the day.
  • Vitamin D: Get your level checked to see what you need.  Some people need the RDA of 250 IU/d, and some people require more than 5,000 IU ever day to get the same blood level! I have had several patients say they don’t get colds as often, and others say they feel more energetic when they have sufficient supplies of Vitamin D.

There are many other supplements on the market. Some are marketed specifically for diabetes, weight management, and other related diseases.  Always stay in communication with your doctor or other health care practitioner, and monitor your symptoms and blood sugar numbers as regularly as you and they think necessary to avoid getting “behind the eight ball,” and sliding further into this disease.
