You can often get the most state of the art glucometers for free because the drug companies make their money by overcharging you for the glucose strips that come with the meter. You see, only particular glucose strips work for a particular meter, and a box of strips can cost over $70 without a prescription. But you can drastically lesson the cost of glucose strips by first, always having your doctor prescribe them to you instead of buying them over the counter, and second, always having your doctor prescribe 200 strips at a time. A box of glucose strips usually has 100 strips, but your doctor prescribing you 200 at a time, i.e., two boxes, will cost you the same copay as being prescribed 100. At $70 per box of 100 strips, and $20 per copay for 2 boxes, these two tricks reduce the cost per strip from 70 cents to 10 cents. This is the only prescription I now have for my diabetes.
